water is a metaphor of and a literal vehicle for the migration of people and the transportation of goods from one land ... to another.
I often question the themes of globalism and migration and their consequences of cultural assimilation, isolation, and the disintegration of personal and collective memories. Water has become an ever more important element in my installations, both as a material and in the immediate environment surrounding the work. Especially with its allusion to rivers and oceans, water is a metaphor of and a literal vehicle for the migration of people and the transportation of goods from one land, one world, to another. In recent years I have begun constructing vessels, in particular boats, in order to explore these ideas, intertwining different spatial narratives that connect the history of the Americas. In many ways these ideas are trying to reinterpret the "discovery" of this continent, which for those of us with indigenous blood is a never-ending event.
